Social media – what is it?

If you run a business, you’ve probably been thinking about getting involved in social media. Maybe you’ve dismissed it as a fad in the past, however, this ‘fad’ isn’t going anywhere – it’s very much here to stay.

So what is social media all about?

Research shows that social media adoption by small business doubled from 2009 to 2010. 61% (percent) of small business owners now use social media to help identify and attract new customers, 75 percent have a company page on a social networking site, and 45 percent expect their social media activities to be profitable within the next 12 months. (Social Media Today)

In fact, when asked what new hire would most help their business, 9 percent said a social media expert, making it the second most popular choice after bookkeeper.  (Small Business Monitor/American Express OPEN)

Consistency is the key to being successful with social media.

In order to be successful at using social media as a marketing tool, you need knowledge of the rules of social media engagement;

  • sharing interesting content
  • contributing to discussions
  • not just posting about you, your company and what you do

You also need for your efforts to be consistent and engaging – that means being active most days, if not every day. If you’re anything like most business owners, you’ve possibly just rolled your eyes and thought

Who has that kind of time?

We do! On your behalf, we’ll create your pages, research your information, write and post your tweets/status updates at least three times a day every day and engage with followers/friends. We can even blog for you. And, if you want to dabble along the way, that’s great! But if you’re strapped for time, you know it’s getting done and you don’t have to think about it.

Wondering what the ROI of social media is?

You’ll grow an audience of future customers, build your reputation, further engage your current customers and showcase your smarts in the process.

Aside from that, social media is such a fundamental shift in the way the world communicates, if you don’t engage now, some sources suggest that businesses without a social media presence will cease to exist in 5 years time.
